Sacrifice the Throw.. Not Your Options!

Sacrifice throws or suicide throws, whatever you want to call them are very effective but also very dangerous if they don't work out.

It's called a sacrifice throw because you sacrifice a standing position for one on the ground. Judo has many of these throws as does jiu-jitsu. There can be few things worse than executing a sacrifice throw and failing. If you're on the mats in your dojo or even in a Judo tournament it's not so bad, heck even in the UFC if all goes wrong you can always tapout. But not on the street.

Imagine you go for the sacrifice throw but they don't come with you to the ground. There you are, on the ground, with them standing over you, that's bad, very bad.

Luckily we are not without options. The video below shows a sacrifice throw and a few options to save your bacon if all goes wrong.

Your Standing Arm Lock not Working?.... Try this!

So they bomb you with a straight punch. You block and strike them in the ribs then execute a standing arm lock but....

If you have been looking at my articles for a while now, you know I'm a big fan of chaining techniques together. Taking techniques out of the syllabus and linking in ways that make sense. It would be amazing if in a real fight that your first point of contact, your first technique was the one that ended the fight but in reality it often isn't.

Always remember you do what you practice!

Check out the standing arm lock and a few options of what you can do if it doesn't work out.

A nice training tip to help you flow from one technique to another is, when you're practicing your techniques and you find yourself out of position, instead of stopping and starting over quickly move to another technique that fits the situation. Go slow though as your partner likely will not be expecting this new technique.

Surprize Them with this Combination!

Today let look at chaining two attacks together.
This combination works very well if you pay attention to the small details. Both the heel hook and the hip lock work because you're killing (pinning) there legs, both legs.

Now the heel hook isn't really new, this has been out there for some time. The hip lock isn't really new either but few people use it. When these attacks are combined they provide a nice one, two attack. Most people will see the heel hook coming and defend it but when you switch to the hip lock while keeping them pinned, unless they have really good hips your likely to get the tap.

Try it out next time you roll and see if it will work for you!

The Trained Killer!

Recently I watched a video where the host of the video commented that he wanted a martial art / training that allowed him to deal with a trained killer.

What does that mean, what IS a trained killer?

Is a trained killer a person with military training?
… or maybe police training?
… how about a streetfighter?
… or a martial artist?

What do you consider a “trained killer”? Do you think your training would keep you safe against this trained killer?

Let’s look at this more closely. I have worked with many solders over the years and I can tell you that their training (at least hand-to hand) is NOT what people would think. Pound for pound, most of my orange belts would best many of the solders I have trained with. Solder, trained killer, yes but in hand-to-hand or self-defence… not really. Now if we are talking elite level solders, ie Special Forces, etc. then that changes the equation. Their training, while better than the average solder, is still not what you would expect. What really sets these people apart from the rest is their mind set. The do or die type of mindset. We will talk about this more in a bit.

How about the police. Really, they are very similar to the military but with a focus put on subdue and restrain. BUT the level of training they receive is, once again, not what you would expect. Trained yes, hand-to-hand / self-defence… not really, trained killer no.

Streetfighter. Formal training or no these people have learned the hard way. They have taken the hits and done what it takes to survive. Trained killer… maybe. Many of these “street fights” have only been in fights with people much less capable, and likely much smaller, then them. Many are more bullies than anything but some can be very capable and very dangerous.

What about a martial artist? Well much like a street fighter this really depends on their training. What martial art do they do? How long have they been training? Do they train for fun, fitness and/or self-defence? Being a black belt in martial art in karate, tae kwon do, akido, judo, jiu-jitsu… does NOT make you a trained killer, though this is often the public’s perception of a black belt. What about me, I’m a 4th degree black belt in Jukoshin Ryu Jiu-jitsu with over 18 years of martial arts experience! Some would say yes I would quality as a “trained killer” and others would laugh, shake their heads, and say no.

How about UFC fighters? Most trained people are going to have a hard time dealing with any UFC professional fighter. Trained killer… likely. BUT what about somebody like Bas Rutten (if you don’t know who he is, look him up)? Trained killer… YES. How many of the current UFC champs would be able to stand up to Bas is a street fight, no rules, no referee… ? My guess would be not many.

SO what does this all mean? Well first off “trained killer” is a matter of your view point, relative to your training level. If you don’t have much training, the bar is fairly low, lots of training and the bar will be higher. Does what you train in have an effect, yes… and no. There are some martial arts that are much better for self-defence than other but I’m not going into that debate here. It is very possible for somebody to be in a solid self-defence martial art style, could have a black belt and still not be able to defend themselves. It is also possible for somebody to be in a martial art style that is lacking and still be very effective.

At a base level, what makes somebody good at self-defence is the same thing that makes somebody a “trained killer”… the willingness to do what it takes to win. Don’t get me wrong, training does play a role, but it’s not enough, if you’re not willing to do what it takes to win.

Next week I should have a new video for you!

When they try to kick you when you're down

Ok this week we are not talking about something bad happening when you are already in a bad mood but literally what to do when they try to kick you while you are laying on the ground.

So you founds yourself laying on the ground with your attacker standing over you. This is probably one of the worst places you can be, aside from them sitting on top of you raining down punches (We talked about that previously, you can check it out HERE.

Maybe you slipped or tripped, or maybe you got knocked down. Either way it doesn't really matter so long as you're still with it enough to be able to defend yourself.

When watching the video take a look at my hands when I'm on the ground. Am I sloppy and not protecting my head... OR am I doing this on purpose?

The answer IS: I'm doing it on purpose. When I leave my head undefended I am baiting the attacker. He's so mad a me that it will be almost impossible for him to resist trying to kick me in the head and that's good. WHY? Well I can now anticipate his attack. Since I know where he will kick, the block and counter attack becomes much easer.

One thing to always and I do mean ALWAYS remember is that in a real fight, when you are on the ground is to get back on your feet as soon as possible. But I'm a BJJ black belt you say and I don't fear being on the ground, I love it you say. Even if you do have the ability to take care of yourself on the ground, remember:

  • A real fight is rarely just one on one, other people can and often will get involved.
  • When you are on the ground defending against two attackers is far harder then when you're standing.
  • When your on the ground you are 100% committed. Your ability to withdraw from the fight if things start going bad is almost 0%.
You have to know what to do when you're on the ground but it's should never be where you want to end up. Here is another article about SURVIVING ON THE GROUND.

Defence Against the Grab and Punch!

Today lets look at some responses to when somebody grabs you then throws that bomb at your head.
I have seen this exact tactic used by a couple of people in a tussle outside of a bar one. (No I wasn't involved, just an onlooker).

The technique is great at stopping their attack cold then slapping on a super tight shoulder lock.

==>Defence Against a Grab and Punch<==

But what if they let go as you go for their arm?

Don't panic! Don't freeze! Switch to another attack! The quicker you can do this, with little or no hesitation the more likely you are actually to finish them. The ability to switch from one technique to another seamlessly is where real self-defence lies. Remember the syllabus is the starting point not the entire race.

They will never see this coming!

The wonderful thing about jiu-jitsu is that there are so many ways to go from point A to B. I love to sit and think about different ways to get to locks and chokes, change positions, sweep, etc. It's fun to think about all the different ways you could do something, and really that IS what jiu-jitsu is about!

My students have gotten use to me saying "Come here, there is something I want to try." Sometime an idea works, sometimes it doesn't. THEN there are times when lighting strikes. You think of something so easy and efficient you wonder why it took you so long to see it.

Well the technique below is one of those moments.

The great thing about this technique is that it uses your opponent's own natural reactions against him and it's more or less a total body movement.

When they give you a push...

Let’s get right into this week’s video.

Somebody aggressively pushes you with one hand in a push and punch type of attack.
You lock out their wrist, dislocating it then take them to the ground and finish them off…

…BUT what if they pull their hand free before you get the lock fully on?

Now there standing in front of you, even angrier than before, what do you do?

Here are a few options for follow up techniques that will keep your attacker on the ropes until you can finish him off.

Remember ALWAYS have a plan B!
When in doubt HIT THEM! If you stand there thinking “Why didn’t that work, it works in class?” then you’re done.

You NEED to practice this stuff in class if you don’t think about it and practice it, it will not be there when you need it.

Straight Arm Lock Follow-up Techniques!

Today lets look at some follow up options from the straight arm lock.

Your attacker punches you execute a double downward palm block with a back fist to the head. You then move into the straight arm lock but your attacker pulls his arm either up or out. Check out this video for a few possible options.

This is only a few techniques that you could go to. Remember if you don't practice it now don't expect to be able to do it later when you need it. The flow of techniques from one to another is a learned art so practice, practice, practice!

Blocked armbar... Choke them!

Here is another nice sport grappling technique.

We have all gotten into and armbar and have had our opponent block it. Now there are many, many ways to break their grips and go for the armbar or move to other techniques. This is just another option to add to your list. What's really nice about it is that is allows you to take their back if they try to sit up.

A winding choke also works very well from here. for the winding choke simply pass the near side lapell to your hand on the far side of their head.

Grabbed From Behind!

your standing there minding your own business then out of nowhere somebody comes up behind you and bearhugs you. Luckily they didn't get your arms. You've done this before in class so you know how to handle this. You, strike and pin their hands, step back to isolate their leg and S@1T they step back as well. Now what do you do?

This week we are going to look at a few possible follow up techniques incase the above happens.

Here are just some of the options:

  • Scissor throw
  • Elbow to the head and full wrist lock
  • Elbow to head and reverse hammer lock or kimura
  • Elbow to the head and outer winding throw

Remember if you don't practice this types of follow-ups or chaining techniques together don't expect to be able to do it when it counts on the street, because you will not! No matter what type of martial art you do, chaining of techniques like this will help you understand your art so much more completely.

Back Roll Sweep!

Today lets look at a nice escape/sweep from guard to a leg takedown to an ankle lock submission.
The is primarily a sport grappling technique but could have a self-defence application under the right situations.

You have your opponent in your closed guard, he stands to break open your guard and start a pass.
You quickly move to a far guard, then execute a back roll to come to the side of your opponent. This sets you up nice for a leg takedown and ankle lock.

This technique is one of those techniques that often will confuse your opponent. They assume you're going for a kneebar but in fact your rolling by them to land at their side.

Get it a shot next time somebody stands up in your guard.

Surprise Them With This Lock Next Time You Roll!

Today lets switch over to sport grappling technique. Now you could use this next technique for self defence but there are a lot of other options from this position that would likely be better.

This is a lock that you don't see a lot of but if you can get into the proper position for it, it can be highly effective. What lock am I talking about... the HIP LOCK. There are a lot of locks out there that target the foot and knee but not a lot that target the hip.

Have a look at the video below and see what you think.

While hip locks aren't one of my typical go to techniques I have had a certain measure of success with them. They work the best when your in somebody's closed or far guard and are a nice follow up to either an achilles or heel hook that just isn't working.

Next time your rolling look to try a hip lock for any of these positions:

  • Closed guard (just step over)
  • Standing far guard (move their feet off your hips and step over)
  • Blocked Scissor sweep (You stop their scissor sweep and are in a perfect position for a hip lock)
  • Heel hook (you have the heel hook on but just aren't getting it, sit up and step over for a hip lock).
There are lots of places it can work from and I find many people think you're going to target their knee or foot so it surprises them when you attack the hip instead.

Not a common lock but can be effective if done right and well timed.

Front Bear Hug Escape and Follow-ups

Here is another installment in our follow up series. This time we will be looking at the front bear hug under the arms. I have to admit I'm not sure why anybody would ever do this. The attackers hands are ties up while the defender has full use of his hands. The most likely purpose is to pick you up to carry you away or to slam you to the ground. Either way work quick and hard to get free.

Here are a few options to make them let go and follow-up techniques if the first does not work.

That's all for today, short and simple.

Happy Canada Day (July 1st) and Happy 4th of July to all our friends in the USA! Have a great week all!

Can You Survive on the Ground?

Sorry I'm a little late getting today’s blog out.

Today let’s focus on a little ground self-defence. We have had discussions before on the difference between sport grappling and self-defence so I won't go into again here but if you haven't read that article you can check it out HERE:

Street self-defence from top of Guard
Surviving the Knee on Belt Ground and Pound!

No matter what style of martial art you study you should have some basic idea of what to do if you get taken to the ground. Now standing back and saying “Well I just wouldn't let them get that close to me to be able to take me to the ground.” Just isn't realistic. Even IF you were a master at keeping your distance and keeping all attackers at bay wouldn’t you still want to be able to handle yourself on the ground in case s*&t happened?

Have a look at these videos which will give you a few idea of what you can do if you find yourself in
the bottom of somebody's scarfhold.

When practicing these types of ground self-defence remember that your attacker is likely mad at you and that works in our favour. The angrier they are then the less tactile they are likely to be. This makes our defences work better and allows us to use their aggressiveness against them.

What to do when your hip throw doesn't work

So today lets get back on topic.

Lets look at a few possible follow up techniques to a failed hip throw (Ogoshi). Chances are that if you have a hip throw in your syllabus you likely already have a few follow up techniques for it built right into your system. This is great, but I like options.

Here are three possible options, at least one I sure you haven't see and will likely surprise you with it's simplicity and effectiveness.

Jiu-jitsu on-line!

Well today is a little shameless self promotion. Next week I will have more of our usual content as well look at some follow up techniques from a failed hip throw.

But for today....

Have you ever considered doing jiu-jitsu?

Do you currently study jiu-jitsu (BJJ or TJJ)?

Do you study another martial art?

Jukoshin Ryu Jiu-jitsu is a practical, no-nonsense form of jiu-jitsu that focuses purely on self-defence. They is NO sport version. This style is designed to keep you safe on the street but putting attackers down quick and hard, while allowing you to remain on your feet.

I have been exposed to many styles of jiu-jitsu from all around the world and in my opinion none are as complete or as powerful as Jukoshin. I'm not going to stand a on podium and say it's the best style of jiu-jitsu ever, but it's certainly the best that I have been exposed to.

Jukoshin by itself it's very powerful but combined with BJJ, Karate, Judo, Taekwondo, kick boxing, etc. it can be even more powerful. So if you have ever thought of taking up jiu-jitsu or adding another style to what you already know I would highly recommend Jukoshin Ryu Jiu-jitsu.

Not near a Jukoshin instructor... than have a loot at our on-line distance education program.

Blocking Drill – Adding liveness

Today let’s look at a nice drill you can practice to add liveness to your training. Unlike other sport oriented martial art techniques, self-defence based techniques are hard to practice in a free or “live” way. Now when I refer to liveness I’m referring to a randomness of attack or technique.

Once we have learned some techniques we need to start adding some liveness or randomness into our drills. When we learn a technique it’s typically in a very static way. We know what’s coming and what we are going to do. This is often referred to as “kata” or maybe “kumite”. When we hear the work kata we often think of martial arts like karate, any pre-set series of movements, with a partner or without, is a kata.

The thing is that in a fight we are not typically going to have time to think about what their attack is going to be or what we want our response to their attack to be. They are going to attack and we need to respond. We need to take what they give us and work with it.

So how do we add this element of randomness and still stay safe? Well one way is the SHARK BAIT OR CIRCLE DRILL that we talked about before. Another way is to add randomness but narrow the focus.

The “Liveness” Drill

  • This drill is designed to be done with two people, one attacks and the other defends.
  • Two (2) types of attacks are agreed on, (straight punch and hook punch), (hook punch and front kick)…
  • The defender then selects two techniques, one for each attack.
  • The drill is then ready to start.
  • The attacker attacks with either of the two selected attacks and the defender must respond to the attack. The defender is NOT told which attack will be used by the attacker.
  • Start slow, the speed and aggressiveness can be slow increased as both people become comfortable with the drill.
  • Make sure to very your timing and move around a little, don’t stay too static.

As your skill with this drill improves you can add additional attack options. (straight punch, hook punch, front kick)… You could even add the element of weapons, with rubber knifes and padded batons, just have the attacker start with their hand behind their back.

Another version
As above only the attacker and defender stand back to back. The attacker shouts “GO” and then turns around and attacks. The defender turns to defend. This will further reduce any visual clues as to what the attack will be (especially if using weapons).
Remember start slow!

As with any drill remember to use your head, respect your training partner and stay safe.

Once we know a bunch of techniques why don’t we train like this all the time, wouldn’t it be better? No not really. Our ability to adapt and adjust would become very good but our technique would suffer. You see we still need the “kata”. It’s through the practice of the kata that we can work on the never ending list of small details in an effort to perfect the technique. This simply cannot be done in a random setting.

I will leave the discussion about good technique vs. perfect technique for another day.

Attacking the Turtle Position - Leg Squeeze Lock Version 2

As promised here is another way for you to get to the leg squeeze lock.

This time we have broken open the turtle position and have gone for a hooks in rear mount. Maybe we have tried to get a collar choke, rear naked choke… and it’s just not working. Well with this we can switch to a leg lock which is harder to defend since we have out hooks in.
Here are the other videos if you missed them:

Attacking the Turtle Position... Leg squeeze lock

Today let’s take a look at another way of breaking down and attacking the turtle position. As I said before I’m not a big fan of this position in grappling and it’s downright stupid in a self-defence situation. I won’t even teach it to my students, except what they need to know to as a training partner.

Last time we broke down the turtle position, rolled them and then applied a choke to finish. You can see it again here ATTACKING THE TURTLE V1.

This time we are going to breakdown and control the position, isolate a leg and finish with a leg squeeze lock. Check it out.

Next week I will show you another entry into this technique.

Ouchi Gari Throw Not Working... Try These Follow-ups!

Let’s continue with our looking at follow-up or chaining techniques together. We have been through a number of techniques now so you know what this segment is all about, mainly what to do if your first technique doesn’t work.

There are lots of reasons why a technique may not work, it was done poorly, the attacker moved in a way you didn’t anticipate, the softening strikes didn’t work… In the case of the inside hock or ouchi gari throw, you fail to get them back on their heels and their leg just doesn’t move.

Here are some possible follow up ideas:
  •  Knee groin and continue with inside hock
  •  Knee groin change to guillotine to outside hock to finish.
  • Grab lapel, push and switch to lapel shoulder throw.
  •  Knee groin, hammer lock.

Note that sometimes in a failed technique we can go directly to another technique and other times it’s beneficial to add another softening strike. The point is to always keep your attacker off balance both literally and metaphorically. If their trying to defend what you’re doing or recovering from a strike it’s very hard for them to attack.

Now there are many options these are just a few, think about what techniques you would go it and tray them out.

Check out some of our past follow up videos:
