Surprise Them With This Lock Next Time You Roll!

Today lets switch over to sport grappling technique. Now you could use this next technique for self defence but there are a lot of other options from this position that would likely be better.

This is a lock that you don't see a lot of but if you can get into the proper position for it, it can be highly effective. What lock am I talking about... the HIP LOCK. There are a lot of locks out there that target the foot and knee but not a lot that target the hip.

Have a look at the video below and see what you think.

While hip locks aren't one of my typical go to techniques I have had a certain measure of success with them. They work the best when your in somebody's closed or far guard and are a nice follow up to either an achilles or heel hook that just isn't working.

Next time your rolling look to try a hip lock for any of these positions:

  • Closed guard (just step over)
  • Standing far guard (move their feet off your hips and step over)
  • Blocked Scissor sweep (You stop their scissor sweep and are in a perfect position for a hip lock)
  • Heel hook (you have the heel hook on but just aren't getting it, sit up and step over for a hip lock).
There are lots of places it can work from and I find many people think you're going to target their knee or foot so it surprises them when you attack the hip instead.

Not a common lock but can be effective if done right and well timed.
